A documentary about Amsterdam’s Begijnhof: a living museum where residents, tourists, and two churches coexist in a place that for centuries has symbolized female autonomy in the heart of the city.
Many tall tales are told by and about individuals who, through their actions, are said to have changed the course of history. The loss of our Indies, the former Dutch East Indies, was so profound for some that fact and fiction began to blur. The end of our colony and the way the Netherlands tried to hold onto it became fertile ground for all sorts of wild actions, which—whether true or not—led to these strong stories. Some events from that time sounded so adventurous that they exerted a powerful attraction on young men who, without the structure of family life and after sometimes horrific experiences in the camps, wanted to make their mark. Could everything really have happened as told? Or has the line between fact and fiction sometimes become blurred? This concept is explored in this documentary which will air in april 2026.
